Excessive Heat Warning in Effect, Princeton Cooling Station Available.

Princeton residents in need of a cooling station may stop by the Princeton Police Department for air conditioning, cold water and places to sit.

A mid-summer heat wave that began Monday is expected to last through Friday or Saturday, with heat index values expected to reach and exceed 100 degrees during certain portions of the week, according to the National Weather Service.

The service issued an Excessive Heat Warning for multiple counties in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, including Mercer County, through 8 p.m. Wednesday night.

The heat is expected to intensify later in the week, with the highest heat indices reaching 105 degrees on Thursday and Friday afternoons, according to the forecast.

Today, Tuesday, NWS expects the dewpoints and relative humidity to fall slightly, resulting in a heat index near 100 degrees.

The highest heat indices are expected between 1 and 6 p.m. through Wednesday.  Temperatures are expected to reach into the 90's.

Conditions will be dangerous for those working outside or living in non-air conditioned homes. Young children and adults over 50 are expected to be adversely impacted, and leaving anyone in non-air conditioned cars, including children and pets, can be fatal, the NWS warns.
