Brown Bag Series Lecture: Constructing the Past and Shaping the Present in Appalachia Through Dance / Presented by Dr. Deborah McLaughlin and Dr. Theresa Burriss, Radford University

Funded
by a Radford University (RU) faculty research grant, RU Director of Dance
Education and choreographer Dr. Deborah McLaughlin collaborated with Dr.
Theresa Burriss, chair of the RU Appalachian Studies Program, to use
Appalachian miners’ oral histories as well as her own research as seed material
for RU’s performance of "The Shadow Waltz." Dr. McLaughlin and Dr. Burriss
will discuss how the performance weaves miners’ stories with dance, music and
text to reflect the history and mysterious pull of Appalachian coal mining.
This is the third collaboration between Dr. McLaughlin and Dr. Burriss in a
trilogy of Appalachian dance and theatre pieces which began in 2009.
