Here's the story of Marlene Konkoly, who found creative ways to spend less and save more so she can retire at 50. This story is the first in our series about Extreme Savers.
Americans may be living longer, but our retirement plans aren’t keeping up. Which means people are living longer with smaller bank accounts. But Marlene Konkoly will retire at age 50. How did she do it? She contributes a whopping 45 percent of the gross annual income she earns as a procurement officer for an automotive finance company to her retirement—all while owning a home and remaining debt-free. Konkoly is actually well ahead of the retirement savings curve compared to many of her fellow Americans. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, fewer than half of Americans even know how much money they would need to retire. And nearly a third of employees who had access to a defined contribution plan such as a 401(k) did not …

"Some students will never have the opportunity to go to France, eat at a French restaurant or with a French family," said Dupuy. "This brings the French culture into the classroom."
"Any time you do something that brings real life to the classroom, it's much more memorable," according to John Witherspoon Middle School Teacher Alisa Dupuy. If you happen to be studying French, "real life" encompasses a delicious grand repas, or French dinner, for everyone to enjoy. As part of a unit on food, students in Dupuy's eighth-grade French classes recently sat down to a three-course meal that included a salad, roast, ratatouille, three types of cheeses and, for desert, a delicious tarte. "The students love it," said Dupuy. "Many of them try new things for the first time and discover they like them." I definitely thought it might be explosions far away. How could it be thunder on such a quiet, calm night, with the stars out. Eerie. Thanks for the update. I thought I was crazy.   more ›
