Events in Princeton This Week

There's never a lack of things going on around Princeton. Here are some highlights of local events this week.

Monday

  • Princeton municipal offices will be closed today.
  • Princeton Public Library will also be closed.
  • Central Jersey Waste will operate its normal garbage pickup.
Veterans Day Observance at Princeton University. Invocation, benediction, presentation of the colors, and music. Remarks by Lt. Col. Peter Knight, the director of Princeton's Army officer education program. Singing of 'Star Spangled Banner' and 'America the Beautiful,' a viola solo, and taps. Chapel, 8:30-9 a.m. 

The Spirit of Princeton will host a Veterans Day Ceremony at the All Wars Monument located at the intersection of Nassau and Mercer Streets, 11 a.m. 

Professor Willett Kempton of the University of Delaware will give a talk,  'Offshore Wind and Vehicle to Grid Power' at Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory. 4:30-6 p.m. 


Tuesday

Peter Baker, White House correspondent for the New York Times and author of 'Days of Fire: Bush and Cheney in the White House,' presents a talk based on his book. A public reception, book sale, and book signing in the Bernstein gallery follow. Woodrow Wilson School, Princeton University, Bowl 016, Robertson Hall, 4:30 p.m.

Salt Creek Grille Princeton will host an Esporao Winemakers Dinner. Enjoy a five-course dinner expertly prepared by Executive Chef Fabian Quiros, with each course paired to a selection of Portugal's Esporao wine. Reservations required, 6 p.m.  

The Rutgers Master Gardeners of Mercer County will host a program, “Winter Containers.” Kelly Thompson will demonstrate how to create beautiful decorations for outdoors as well as for inside your home. Learn which plants work best in arrangements and how they can be combined for an attractive effect.  7-8 p.m. 

Story Slam: "Silver Linings" Edition. In any life situation, funny or sad, a silver lining can likely be found.  Think of a time when you found a silver lining when it was least expected.  Bring your prepared story (or poem) of three minutes or less to share with the audience.  Reading will be heard on a first-come first-served basis as time allows. Princeton Public Library, Community Room, 7-9 p.m. 

The Princeton Macintosh Users' Group presents: Holiday Gadgets and Wireless Accessories 2013. Independant Technology Consultant Doug Dixon will discuss new devices, and demonstrate fun and useful portable accessories -- especially to extend your mobile devices with wireless connections. Stuart Hall, Room 6, Princeton Theological Seminary, 7:30 p.m. 

Wednesday

Trenton Education Dance Institute’s hosts a 25th Anniversary Celebration.
Enjoy samplings of food and wine, raffles, a tricky tray performances by TEDI dancers. Proceeds from the event will benefit TEDI. Grounds for Sculpture. Doors open at 6 p.m. with raffle drawings starting at 8 p.m. 

Thursday

Princeton Farmer's Market at Hinds Plaza, next to the Princeton Public Library, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. 

Marc Boutavant, the award-winning French author and illustrator of the bestselling picture book Around the World with Mouk and the popular Ariol comic strip will present his latest books: Ghosts and Ariol: Happy as a Pig. Book sales and signing will follow. Princeton Public Library, Story Room, 3rd floor, 5 p.m. 

Morven Museum & Garden hosts an opening reception its exhibit for 'The Age of Sail: A New Jersey Collection' featuring a collection of maritime artifacts and art assembled by Richard Updike. This exhibit, featuring over 100 objects, explores the history of American shipbuilding, sail-making, naval warfare, shipwrecks and rescue, daily life of sailors and more. 5:30-7:30 p.m. 

Got skills?  Learn about skills-based volunteering with Volunteer Connect, which specializes ingiving back and helping area nonprofit organizations advance their missions. Register. Lawrence Library, 7 p.m. 

Princeton University's Lewis Center for the Arts celebrates 'Fiddler at Fifty' to recognize the 50th anniversary of 'Fiddler on the Roof.' Film screening and post film discussion. 185 Nassau Street, 7 p.m. 

Friday

SAVE hosts a Groundbreaking Ceremony at the James Van Zandt house, 1010 Route 601, Blawenburg. The Van Zandt house houses SAVE's administrative offices and the groundbreaking will be for a new animal shelter next door, 3 p.m. 

MarketFair will celebrate its recent renovations with a mall-wide fashion show, tarot card readings, and store specials and giveaways. The first 150 registered attendees will receive swag bags, 5 p.m. 

Princeton-area high schoolers are invited to the Corner House Annual All-City Dodgeball Tournament. Prizes, a trophy and bragging rights are up for the taking. Princeton High School, 6 p.m. 

Princeton Symphony Orchestra will host its Fall Musicale at a private home in Princeton- featuring The Lark Quartet. Cocktails and canapes. Register, 6:30 p.m. 

Author Matthew Quick will discuss the sixth Princeton Reads book, “The Silver Linings Playbook,” and his latest novel for young adults, “Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock,” at the culminating event of Princeton's biennial community-wide book discussion. John Witherspoon Middle School Auditorium, 7 p.m. 

Hear jazz ranging from John Coltrane to Elton John when Karrin Allyson, a Grammy award-nominated singer, presents "A Song for Congo." The concert benefits charities in the Democratic Republic of Congo, including UFAR, founded by Lawrenceville resident Daniel Shungu, which works to eliminate riverblindness as a major public health and socioeconomic problem.  The concert also benefits Woman, Cradle of Abundance. At a private clubhouse in Princeton. Reservations required. 7 p.m. 

Bryan Bowers, master of the autoharp, returns to the Princeton Folk Music Society. He specializes in old-fashioned folk music rooted in the Appalachian tradition which he plays on the autoharp accompanied by rich vocals and entertaining stories.  Christ Congregation Church, 8:15 p.m.
