Princeton University Ranked No. 6 in the World by British Publication

Princeton University is No. 6 in the latest ranking of the top colleges in the world, published by British newspaper Times Higher Education on Wednesday.

Rutgers University barely missed the top 100, checking in at No. 103 on the list, which ranks the world’s top 400 colleges.

Times Higher Education used a system that took averaged scores in five areas, including teaching, industry income, research, citations and a university’s international outlook.

Princeton achieved an overall score of 92.7. It was less than two points behind the California Institute of Technology, which scored a 94.9 to top the rankings. Harvard University was the highest ranked Ivy League school, checking in at No. 2 with an overall score of 93.9. Oxford University, at No. 3, was the highest ranked school outside the United States.

Princeton scored a near-perfect 99.7 in citations; a 97.6 in research; an 89.9 in teaching; an 80.5 in industry income; and a 59.6 in the international outlook category.

Princeton was also ranked seventh by reputation by the publication.

Rutgers achieved an overall score of 52.4, tying it for No. 103 with Stockholm University and the University of Arizona.

The State University of New Jersey scored a 70.4 in citations; 50.1 in research; a 43.4 in teaching; a 35.4 in industry income; and a 31.4 in international outlook.

Rutgers was ranked between 81 and 90 by reputation.

 Teaching, research and citations each accounted for 30 percent of an institution’s score, while international outlook accounted for 7.5 percent and industry outcome was worth 2.5 percent. The complete methodology is available on the Times Higher Education’s website.
