Antibiotic Use is on the Rise Worldwide, Princeton Study Concludes

Use has increased 36 percent in 10 years.

The use of antibiotics around the world is on the rise, according to a recent Princeton University study.

The study, "Global Trends in Antibiotic Consumption, 2000-2010," concludes that antibiotic use has risen by 36 percent in 10 years, according to the University.

Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa account for 75 percent of that rise in use.

Cephalosporins, broad-spectrum penicillins and fluoroquinolones accounted for more than half of that increase, 55 percent from 2000 to 2010.

The study was authored by Thomas Van Boeckel, Simon Levin, Bryan Grenfell, Ramanan Laxminarayan and Quentin Caudron of Princeton, and is featured in the July 10 edition of the journal The Lancet Infectious Diseases.
