Should Princeton Consolidate?

Voters will decide today. The measure must pass in both the borough and the township to move forward.

Today is election day in Princeton and there are contested races for borough mayor, Borough Council and Township Committee. 

But perhaps the most hotly contested issue is whether or not and should consolidate into a combined municipality. 

The Princeton Shared Service and Consolidation Study Commission has been studying the issue for nearly a year. In the spring, the commission voted 9-1 to reccommend the two municipalities merge and outlined a plan estimating that a joint entity would save nearly $3.2 million a year.

Opponents of consolidation have questioned the accuracy of the estimated savings, whether a merger would dilute the value of the borough vote and if police services would decline in a consolidated community.
