Princeton Expands Community Shuttle Service

Service on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays will begin tomorrow.

Looking for an easy way to get to Community Park Pool this summer? Need to go shopping downtown but don’t want to deal with traffic and parking?

Well, you’re in luck, because Princeton Borough and Princeton Township are expanding the in-town shuttle bus for a six-month trial period.

Starting on Wednesday, July 6, the Princeton Community Shuttle Service will operate on Monday, Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for a six-month trial period.

The free bus route will make stops at Elm Court, Harriet Bryan House, Palmer Square, Princeton Shopping Center, the Princeton Senior Resource Center and connections to the University’s Tiger Transit system (see attached pdf document to see a complete schedule and map).

Borough Mayor Mildred Trotman said the expanded shuttle service is exciting.

“Clearly, we have had many people suggest that this is a needed service and I’m hopeful that it will become the vital link to getting around Princeton that we all think it will,” Trotman said.

Additional stops may be added at a later date, officials said.

“There’s great need at Reading Circle, I can’t emphasize that enough” Township Committee member Sue Nemeth said at a recent joint borough and township meeting.. “If we’re going to offer a free service, that’s a group that should be considered at the top of the list.”

Borough officials will administer the program with donations totaling $30,000. The program’s success will be evaluated after six months.

The hope is to get 40 percent ridership, Township Mayor Chad Goerner said recently.

The expanded shuttle service is a result of efforts by the Community Transportation Coordination Initiative, made up of borough, township and university officials.
