UPDATED: Two Men Arrested After Allegedly Trying to Steal Einstein Cutout

The Michelle Obama cutout is still missing.

Two men were arrested on Saturday, June 30 after police allegedly observed them trying to steal the wooden cutout of Albert Einstein that sits along Nassau Street near the Princeton University U-Store, according to Princeton Borough Police.

The two men admitted to police they were trying to "take the sign home," Police Captain Nick Sutter said.

Joseph Day, 22 and Hector Lloyd, 24, both of the United Kingdom, were charged with theft after allegedly taking the sign from outside of 98 Nassau Street. They were scheduled to appear in court on July 1.

The Einstein cutout, designed by Joy Chen of JOYcards, is a favorite with locals and tourists alike and sits next to a similar cutout of Michelle Obama, a 1985 graduate of Princeton University.

But the Michelle Obama cutout, also designed by Chen, went missing around the same time and has yet to be found, said Mimi Omiecinski, owner of Princeton Tour Company.

"As of this investigative report, I have no reason to believe she'll be returned," Omiecinski said.

The cutout was at the Princeton U store around midnight, but was gone by about noon the next day, Omiecinski said. The other cutouts- of former Princeton University President Jonathan Edwards and author F. Scott Fitzgerald- were in disarray in the alley.

"It had to be spurred by some liquid courage by because it was after midnight," said Omiecinski, adding that she has no intention of filing a police report and using taxpayer money to get the Michelle Obama cutout back.

Instead, she has plans to not only replace Michelle Obama, but also add Princeton luminaries Cornel West, Woodrow Wilson, Robert Oppenheimer, Paul Robeson and Sonya Sotamayor to the mix. Only three signs would be displayed at a time, with the rotation changing weekly, she said. Only Einstein would remain a permanant fixture.

"The signs are adored by people in town, but it's not unnoticed by me that we lack a certain amount of diversity," Omiecinski said. "Princeton Tour Company would love to get suggestions from residents (about the cutouts) like Brooke Shields or Grover Cleveland. I want to take as many personalities as possible and celebrate them all, whether they're town or gown."
