Update: Three Dead in Route 1 Accident, Driver of Tractor Trailer Charged

The accident happened around 6:30 p.m.

A New York man has been charged with three counts of death by auto after a fatal accident on Business Route 1 in Lawrence Township killed a woman and two young children.

Richard Williams, 45, of Brooklyn, N.Y. is being held at the Mercer County Correction Center in lieu of $100,000 bail, according to the Mercer County Prosecutor's Office.

Williams was driving the tractor trailer around 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 2 near the intersection of Brunswick Pike and Darrah Lane. The accident remains under investigation, but authorities believe a family in a Chevrolet Tahoe collided with the tractor trailer as Williams was making an illegal U turn while traveling south on Brunswick Pike.

The driver of the Tahoe, Shaqwan Tisdale, 25, of Levittown, Pa., and 8-year-old Mellady Durante remain in the hospital in stable condition.  Jamella Tisdale, 25, was killed, along with 9-year-old Jaevon Durante and Jaden Tisdale, who was three and a half months old.

My thoughts and prayers go out to all those involved in this horrible tragedy. Our highways are truly war zones, the carnage is appalling.

This horrific accident might have had less serious consequences had the truck had the horizontal bar that stops cars from going underneath trucks, as they have, by law, in the UK.

My heartfelt prayers and condolences to the survivors and families of the victims. This tragedy is so devastating that words are inadequate: A young mother, a boy who must have been ready for third grade, and an infant boy, all lost, in an instant. The first responders must be traumatized. The benighted driver who made a bad decision at incalculable cost, did not intend to kill. He will pay the legal price and a steeper emotional one. How can one not be angry, yet who among us has made no mistake, but without the direst of consequences. May the young father summon the strength to go on. One of my close friends and her son of 9 at the time miraculously escaped almost exactly such a Rte.1 accident alive.

This idiot was actually making a U-turn in an 18-wheeler at Business US 1 and Darrah Lane? Tragic but also idiotic. Sock it to him.

My prayers for the victims, survivors, and their families.
