Teen Charged in Montgomery High Bomb Scare

Charges against a second person, a juvenile, are under review.

 

An 18-year-old has been charged in connection with a bomb scare at Montgomery High School on Wednesday and a similar charge against a 17-year old has been forwarded to the Somerset County Prosecutor's office for review, Montgomery Township Police announced on Thursday.

Brandon Perera, 18, of Montgomery, was charged with disorderly conduct following a police investigation.

Perera, a senior at Montgomery High School, and the juvenile allegedly hung a metallic object wrapped in wires from an unused locker in a hallway inside the school.  The suspicious object was located by a teacher who alerted school administration. 

The incident happened on June 12 at about 1:20 p.m., according to police.

About 1,500 students, faculty and staff were evacuated and students were sent home after about 30 minutes. 

Law enforcement personnel from the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office and the New Jersey State Police Arson/Bomb Unit responded.  The device was deemed safe and there was never any communicated bomb threat.  The school was re-opened at 4 p.m.
