The leak was apparently sparked by the home's pool heater and the carbon monoxide got into the house and set off the home's CO alarm, Tomalin said.

Carbon monoxide is toxic, but colorless, odorless and tasteless.

CO monitors are not required in New Jersey homes, but are highly reccomended, Tomalin said.

The Mercer County Ladder Strike Team responded to Sunday's incident, including teams from Montgomery, Hopwell, Lawrenceville, Pennington and Plainsboro. The Princeton First Aid & Rescue Squad responded, as did rescue teams from Montgomery Township and West Windsor.

Emergency crews ventilated the home with fans and the residents will arrange for repairs to the pool, Tomalin said.
