Princeton Academy Headmaster Lectures on Bridging the Gender Gap in Education

Olen Kalkus, the founding headmaster of Princeton Academy of the Sacred Heart, talked about the importance of boys’ development and education last Thursday in his “Bridging the Gender Gap” lecture.

In a two-hour conversation, Kalkus addressed the need for educators and parents to accept and understand the differences in how boys develop mentally and physically. In understanding those differences during their early years, Kalkus reasoned boys could receive a better education via methods tailored to their growth, transitions and genetic differences.

“Each child is unique, but gender is an organizing principle in child development,” said Kalkus. “There are no difference in what girls and boys can learn; there are differences in the best ways to teach them.”

By taking their cognitive and physical stages into account,  Kalkus explained educators could teach in ways to keep them engaged.

“Understanding boys’ development keeps them engaged as students and makes them less likely to fall into negative stereotyped behavior and more likely to succeed  in education and life,” he added.
