James Christy Play Reading: "Egyptian Song"

The Arts Council of Princeton hosts a reading of a new play called EGYPTIAN SONG. The play follows the life of a young girl growing up in rural Egypt in the 1920s. This play, loosely based on the childhood of the legendary Egyptian singer Umm Kulthum, tackles social, cultural and political issues between the West and the Middle East that we continue to see in headlines. The story follows an incredibly gifted young girl who needs to dress as a boy to be allowed to travel to the countryside to sing. As her fame grows, her family is threatened by the tension that comes when a young unmarried girl gets the attention its society denies. The play is written by ACP Artist-in-Residence and Princeton playwright James Christy. It will star Maulik Pancholy (30 RockWeeds) and Tala Ashe (Smash), and will be directed by Julliard fellow Michael Barakiva. Original music will be developed and performed by Pew Fellow Hanna Khoury.
