Former Ambassador Matlock was appointed Ambassador to the Soviet Union by President Reagan, and he served from 1987 to 1991. Prior to his appointment, Ambassador Matlock spent more than 35 years working on US-Soviet relations in the Foreign Service, attending all but one of the US-Soviet summits that were held from 1972 to 1991. Since his tenure, Ambassador Matlock has written Reagan and Gorbachev: How the Cold War Ended and Autopsy on an Empire, an account of the end of the Soviet Union.
