Curbside Garbage Collection Available to All Residents Beginning Jan. 2

Effective Jan. 2 2013, all Princeton residents will be eligible for weekly municipal curbside trash collection, officials have announced. This is not a change for Borough residents, who already have this service. Township residents who would like to participate in the municipally funded service should contact their trash hauler to cancel their service provider in writing at least seven days before Jan. 1. 

Hospital Employee Charged With Sexually Assaulting Patients

An emergency room worker at the University Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro was arrested on Saturday and charged with forcing a female patient to improperly touch him, and in a separate incident, was charged with sexually assaulting another female patient. 

Princeton Startup Helps Consumers Monitor and Reduce Energy Costs

Savraj Singh was intrigued as he watched the 2008 presidential candidates, each of whom stressed the importance of focusing on energy savings. Singh looked for a phone app or an easy-to-use product that monitor his home energy usage in real time. He couldn’t find one. “I thought I could probably make this system, so I prototyped it at my house with my dad (Sutinder Singh),” said Savraj Singh, who earned his computer science degree from Princeton University in 2003.

Schools Announce Hurricane Make-Up Days

During Hurricane Sandy, Princeton Public Schools were forced to cancel school for five days, although they made up two of those days soon after. On Tuesday, the Board of Education unanimously approved rescheduled the three remaining days, plus outlined a plan to fit in an additional three snow days if necessary. 

Princeton Resident Charged with Animal Abuse

A Princeton Township man faces six counts of animal cruelty after a dog in his care died, according to press reports. NJ.com reports that Tracy Stanton of Lawrence left her German Shepherd-mix dog Shyanne with dog trainer Michael Rosenberg, 30 of Princeton on Aug. 26. Two days later, the dog was dead and results show she  had four broken ribs and a punctured lung resulting from a blunt-force trauma.

Village Bakery Has Closed

The Village Bakery in Lawrenceville has gone out of business. In a letter dated Tuesday and posted on the door of the bakery, owner Karen Child explains that the decision to close the business was a difficult one that was the result of losses brought about by Hurricane Sandy and the difficulties she and her husband Bo had in finding qualified staff to help run the bakery.

The bridge that carries Province Line Road over Stony Brook was reopened to non-vehicular traffic on Nov. 16 following the completion of rehabilitation work, the Mercer County administration announced earlier his week. The bridge - located between Pretty Brook Road in Princeton Township and Rosedale Road in Lawrence Township - has been closed to vehicular traffic since 1981 but has been widely used by pedestrians and bicyclists. 

Princeton School Officials Debate Moving School Elections to November

Princeton Public Schools officials are debating whether or not to change annual school elections from April to November. Last year, only 70 of the nearly 600 school districts across New Jersey chose to stay with April elections, including Princeton. Superintendent Judy Wilson said even more districts will probably move to November elections next year. There are pros and cons to both options, but school officials want to hear from voters before making a decision at the next Board of Education meeting on Dec. 18. 

Local Business Owners Honored by Chamber

Four business leaders have been recognized for their contributions to the Princeton area business world.The honorees accepted their Business Leadership Awards at a dinner attended by more than 230 business leaders, local officials and friends held at the Tournament Players Club Jasna Polana on Nov. 28, 2012.

Police Dispatch Moves to Valley Road

Beginning Friday, Nov. 30 at 8 a.m., Princeton Borough Police dispatch and other police communications moved to the Township Police Building at 1 Valley Rd. and the police console at Borough Hall will no longer be staffed. Beginning Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012 at 6:30 a.m., joint police patrols will begin.
