Legal Fees Proved too Much for Citizens Group in Fight Against AvalonBay

Princeton Citizens for Sustainable Neighborhoods (PCSN) cited mounting legal fees as its reason for withdrawing opposition to AvalonBay’s planned redevelopment of a former hospital site, nj.com reports.

The group suddenly withdrew its opposition to AvalonBay’s proposal on Thursday night. AvalonBay is proposing the construction of 280 apartments, including 56 affordable housing units, on the site of the former University Medical Center on Witherspoon Street.

The group has “secured several important commitments from AvalonBay” it told supporters via email, according to the report. One commitment includes the establishment of seven very low-income units. Another includes the donation of $70,000 to the Princeton Arts Council.

Nj.com reports legal fees for PCSN amount to almost $100,000, and that going before the Planning Board last Thursday would’ve carried with it another high fee.

AvalonBay is set to go in front of the Planning Board on Thursday night after having its first plan rejected in December. AvalonBay then sued both the township and the Planning Board.
