How's Your Commute?

With the Route 1 jughandle closures now in place, how is your commute?

The 12-week pilot project to restrict left turns and U-turns on Route 1 at Washington Road and Harrison Street went into effect on Saturday, Aug. 4.

If you travel through the area, we're interested to know what your experience has been with the traffic changes so far.

Drivers traveling into Princeton may no longer turn left from Route 1 north onto Harrison or Washington. Instead, drivers may use Alexander Road or continue north to Scudder’s Mill Road and onto Route 1 south.

The New Jersey Department of Transportation seeks to reduce congestion at those intersections where the rightmost of three lanes becomes crowded with motorists waiting to make left turns, particularly during peak travel periods.

I work in Princeton shopping center and the delivery truck driver called for directions because he could not turn left onto Harrison St. He found his way to the loading dock in about 20 minutes. But as for Washington Rd. it is a disaster. When people realize they can't turn left to Route 1 South, they just make an illegal u-turn around the barrier on the Washington Rd. We witnessed two in a row. Also there is still not a No Right on Red sign at Harrison and Rt. 1 South. What happens when the ambulances switch the light to red and use that Harrison incoming Lane to go thru the intersection?

The DOT employees who are supposed to be observing traffic and recording results are often either seen napping or texting. Our tax dollars at work!

Stacey: Although I do not find the DOT trial to be at all desirable, I have two comments on your entry above.
First, at Washington Road, motorists CAN turn left to Route 1 South according to all the write-ups I've seen. They can't make a U-Turn if that's what you meant. Second, motorists should be able to see an ambulance coming towards them and thus to wait. You have the same possible conflict when the light is green for the turn you are discussing. Personally, I believe that the existing No Right on Red sign for east bound Harrison St traffic turning South onto Route 1 is unnecessary and that removing it would relieve some congestion.
