Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike Wins Tony Award for Best Play

The McCarter Theatre production has been showered with accolades since it premiered in Princeton last fall.

 

McCarter Theatre's production of Christopher Durang's Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike won for Best Play at Sunday night's Tony Awards, broadcast live from Radio City Music Hall. 

The production beat out fellow nominees “The Assembled Parties,” “Lucky Guy” and “The Testament of Mary.”

The play, directed by Nicholas Martin, starred  Sigourney Weaver, David Hyde Pierce, Kristine Nielsen, Genevieve Angelson, Billy Magnussen and Shalita Grant. 

The play is a McCarter commission and won the Edgerton Foundation New American Plays Award. The world premier was at McCarter from Sept. 7- Oct. 14, 2012.

Through the McCarter Lab, McCarter’s new play development program, Artistic Director Emily Mann and the artistic staff provided Durang with several readings and ongoing support that allowed him to refine his play. 

Following its sold-out run at McCarter, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike headed Lincoln Center and then Broadway's Golden Theatre.
