Terhune's Blueberries

This weekend's "Blueberry Bash" offers fun for the whole family.

Children and adults alike might be feeling a little blue this weekend at Terhune Orchards in Lawrence, but that’s a good thing. That’s because this weekend, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday, the farm will be hosting its Blueberry Bash as Terhune Orchards celebrates “everything blueberry.” Admission to the event is free, and parking will be provided at the farm.

Guests are invited to wander through the farm’s fields of blueberry bushes and pick their own blueberries. This year’s annual bash is being held later than last’s year’s event (which was in June), because blueberry season came a little later this summer, farm owner Pam Mount said. “The blueberries are now perfect,” she commented.

Throughout the weekend, there will be a wide variety of delectable blueberry treats for sale at a “blueberry buffet,” including blueberry-apple crisp, blueberry drinks, blueberry muffins, blueberry cobbler, blueberry jam and blueberry salsa. Barbecue chicken and corn on the cob will also be available.

For the kids, there will be free wagon-ride tours of the farm’s orchards and fields; pony rides will be available for a small fee. Tuckers' Tales Puppet Theatre will present a puppet show on Saturday at 12 noon and 2 p.m. that will include “Aesop’s Fables with a little blueberry thrown in,” Mount said.

Children and adults alike will enjoy the live music that will be played at the farm from 12 noon to 4 p.m. both Saturday on Sunday. Adults can stop by Terhune Orchards’ winery for wine tastings — the winery will be open from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday.

On Sunday, orchard guests are invited to participate in a Blueberry Bash Bakeoff, with the requisite ingredient being, of course, blueberries.

To enter the contest, children and adults must submit their recipe and food entry to Terhune Orchards no later than 12 noon on Sunday. The contest will be judged by Susan Yeske, food editor for the Trenton Times. Judging will take place at 1 p.m. on Sunday. There will be a separate category for adults and children. The winner of the adult bakeoff will win a $100 gift certificate to the farm, whereas the winner of the kids category will win a $50 gift certificate, said Mount. Entry details can be found at terhuneorchards.com.
