Local Businesses Create, Sell Reusable Shopping Bag

If the bag sells well, future sales will support local businesses and non-profits

Eight Princeton organizations and local shops have joined forces to create and sell a reusable shopping bag for Princeton this holiday season.

The bag, designed by local graphic artist Maria Bahlman, features a tree with the words BYOBag, fair trade and shop local as its branches and, on the other side, a shopping bag with the words Princeton shops sustainably around its handle.

Funded by Church & Dwight Co. Inc., the bag was created as a collaborative effort between Sustainable Princeton, The Princeton Merchants Association and Fair Trade Princeton, with all proceeds going to support Sustainable Princeton.
“Princeton is becoming a leader in the sustainability arena. There is sincere interest and momentum among local businesses and nonprofits to work together on projects that benefit both the local economy and the environment,” said Diane Landis, coordinator of Sustainable Princeton.

Five hundred bags were printed as a test run.  If they sell well, Sustainable Princeton will print additional bags with proceeds split between local businesses and nonprofits.

The bags, which fold into a small pouch for easy carrying, are being sold for $8 each or $15 for two.

Bags are available at: Infini-T Cafe and Spice Souk; Jane Consignment Store; Labyrinth Books; Princeton Public Library and the Whole Earth Grocery in Princeton.
