AvalonBay Hopes to Demolish Former Hospital This Spring

Prior to demolition, crews will remove underground storage tanks as well as asbestos in the building.

Developer AvalonBay is preparing to officially close on the former hospital site on Witherspoon Street and an official recently outlined the plan to demolish the eight-story building.

AvalonBay Vice President Jon Vogel said the company hopes to close on the property later this month and begin demolition this spring, according to a report in Town Topics.

Prior to demolition, crews will remove underground storage tanks as well as asbestos in the building, according to John Mucha of Yannuzi Wrecking and Recycling Corporation of Hillsborough.

The hospital's demolition will begin along Harris Road, and be done by a 95-foot-high hydraulic excavator and a portion of Witherspoon Street will be closed in front of the property for one day, Mucha said. The building's walls will be taken down in pieces. No wrecking ball will be used.

Most of the materials removed from the site will be recycled at Yanuzzi's facility in Hillsborough, Town Topics reported. Dust will be monitored througout the project.

AvalonBay plans to build 280 rental units, 56 of those affordable units, on the former hospital site.

Council members plan to discuss the demolition plan at its next meeting, scheduled for Jan. 27.
