14th Annual Oyster Bowl is Sunday

Since Jack Morrison launched the Oyster Bowl, the company has raised more than $195,000 to combat breast cancer.

The 14th annual Oyster Bowl, an oyster eating contest and fundraiser kicks off on Super Bowl Sunday from 11 a.m to 2 p,.m. at Blue Point Grill at the corner of Nassau and Pine Streets.

The event benefits the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Central and South Jersey.

Join spectators to watch individual and corporate team contestants devour all the oysters they can eat in two minutes.

Blue Point Grill owner Jack Morrison launched the fundraiser with his staff after discussions about which charity to support. Around the same time, a friend and neighbor of the Morrison family was diagnosed with breast cancer.

"That happened and it knocked my ankles out," Morrison said. "She's a survivor, but as of last year, the statistics were that every 15 minutes someone dies of breast cancer and 105 people die a week from breast cancer."

Since Morrison launched the Oyster Bowl, the company has raised more than $195,000 to combat breast cancer.

On Tuesday, Morrison taped a segment for CBS in Philadelphia. Afterward, a stagehand approached him and to say thank you.

"He said 'my wife's healthcare plan does not cover mammograms and she goes to Komen. It's because of efforts like yours that make that possible,'" Morrison said. "You can't walk a day, a minute, an hour, in this community or any other without finding people who have been affected by breast cancer."

"I've got to give back, I've got to help."

In past years, Morrison has written the checks to the charity himself to get the fundraiser off the ground. Not this year.

"I'm really feeling confident that we're going to raise $25,000 this year," he said.

The oyster eating record was set in 2009 with 102 oysters consumed in two minutes. Last year’s winner ate 99 oysters in the allotted time period.

This year's oyster easting champion will receive an all-inclusive trip for two to the Caribbean. Additional prizes such as a flat-screen TV, a golf foursome, chef tastings, a hotel getaway and more will be raffled off during the contest.

The event also features lunch at Blue Point Grill restaurant and kids’ activities.
