U.S. Rep. Rush Holt Urges Residents to Give Blood
Hurricane Irene forced the Red Cross to cancel dozens of blood drives on the East Coast.
U.S. Rush Holt gave blood at the Red Cross of Central New Jersey in West Windsor on Tuesday and he encourages local residents to follow suit.
Hurricane Irene forced the Red Cross to cancel 60 planned blood drives and 2,000 appointments to give blood, said Joelle Piercy, regional coordinator of volunteers, youth and blood services for the Red Cross.
“I want people to know that this time of year is a good time to give blood,” Holt said on Tuesday. “If you are able to, I urge you to make an appointment to give blood as soon as possible.”
To schedule an appointment to donate blood or locate a nearby blood drive can find a location near them by calling 1-800-Red Cross or at www.redcrossblood.org/make-donation.
“We have an urgent need for blood right now,” Piercy said. “Summer is always a difficult time because a lot of people are on vacation or out of town.”
Most people age 17 and older who are in good health and weigh at least 110 pounds are eligible to donate blood. People who are 16 years old may give blood with parental permission.
Donations of all blood types are needed, especially those with positive blood types. Platelet donors are in especially high demand.

Rush Holt? I challenge any Princeton resident to name three (3) things that this congressman has ever accomplished on our behalf?

Holt has sponsored a variety of bills. H.R. 4159, the School Environment Protection Act of 2009, decreased the use of pesticides in schools and required that the schools inform employees and guardians about the pesticides used. He also sponsored H.R. 3152, the Helping Seniors Choose their Medicare Drug Plan Act, which increased the access that low-income healthcare recipients have to prescription drugs under Medicare and Medicaid. In H.R. 3835, the Protection Against Wrongful Voter Purges Act, Holt tried to regulate the removal of voters’ names from eligibility lists to ensure the validity of those lists. In H.R. 4005, the Judicious Use of Surveillance Tools in Counterterrorism Efforts Act of 2009 (JUSTICE) ACT, Holt increased limits on governmental power with respect to counterterrorism efforts.
On April 18, 2008, Holt was presented with the ASME President's Award in recognition of his "leadership in calling on a renewed national commitment to science, engineering, and math education programs" by past ASME president Terry Shoup. Holt has taken many actions to encourage and strengthen small businesses; Einstein Alley was one of his creations. Mr. Holt’s bill, the K-16 Critical Foreign Language Pipeline Act has encouraged the teaching of foreign languages. Holt has worked hard and advanced legislation to alleviate military suicides.
