Shortly after 1 p.m. on Monday, April 9, a police officer smelled natural gas in the area of Charlton and William streets.
The officer spoke with a construction crew in the southwest corner of William at Charlton and discovered that a worker digging in the area struck a gas service line, cutting the line and causing the leak.
Princeton Fire Department and PSE&G responded and the fire department ordered an evacuation of buildings within a half block perimeter of the leak.
Princeton University Department of Public Safety helped with evacuations of Princeton University owned buildings in the area while the Princeton Borough Police Department evacuated all other residences/buildings within the evacuation zone. Charlton and William Streets were also closed.
PSE&G stopped the leak by 2:04 p.m. all residents were allowed to return home.
No injuries were reported.
