Three Candidates Vie for Two Council Seats

All three candidates will advance to the November ballot.

Three candidates- two incumbents and a newcomer- have filed papers announcing their intention to seek a seat on Princeton Council in January, 2014.

Jenny Crumiller and Patrick Simon, both Democrats currently serving one-year terms, are seeking reelection.

Fausta Rodriguez Wertz is a Republican newcomer to politics. A native speaker of both English and Spanish, she works as a freelance translator and blogs about Latin American issues.

"My campaign is about participating and integrating people from all parts of New Jersey, the U.S. and the world who come to live in our community and have their voices heard," Wertz said.

Wertz was born in Puerto Rico and moved to Princeton from Morristown in 1989. Her son, now in college, attended Princeton Academy of the Sacred Heart, and graduated from Princeton High School.

Wertz wants Princeton Council to be more transparent, discussing important issues in public meetings rather than behind closed doors.

And she believes in fiscal responsibility.

"A lot of people like myself in the former Township or even the former Borough have elderly parents and children in schools," she said. "We're being squeezed while the taxes and expenses of living here are out of sight."

"This is not the kind of economy where you want to make life more difficult for everyone," Wertz said.

She believes Princeton is being watched by everyone else in the state, with people watching the municipal consolidation.

"I think it’s important that people like myself to participate and I think it’s important for Princeton set an example," Wertz said.
